What makes people trust their health to non-medial strangers in here rather than speaking to their doctor?

recently a woman got mad and flagged my response because I asked her "why she was asking strangers to tell her whether she should go see her doctor when she thinks her unborn baby might be at risk?!" HUH?? She was in labor and delivery 3 days earlier and was due in 3 days.

She actually was taking time to poll non-medical strangers about her condition when she was concerned about the safety of her unborn child!

I also see that it seems commonplace for women on here to ask about mucus plugs and other medical issues when they are getting answers from non-medical lay people. Everyone has an opinion… but, me personally, if I am paying a doctor (or my medical insurance is) I’d be asking him/her every question in the book if it cause me even the slightest concern about my unborn child. I wouldn’t be polling strangers about whether or not to ask my doctor a question. This baffles me.

Can you think of any logical reason for this behavior because it is beyond my comprehension!!!

Hi, I can only agree with you. I think the whole concept of that is ridiculous.

I can understand people asking about symptoms they are having – to see if others have the same symtoms and how they dealt with it, and how it evolved. People have their own experience that they can call upon to relay to the asker. I can totally understand that.

But to ask non-medical people questions about health is not clever at all. Doctors are there to answer these questions professionally.

As to polling people when you are in labour, like HUH??? Especially if there are any concerns about the baby, how ludicrous!!

So, in answser to your question, NO, I cannot think why people do this, it is not logical.

      :)

The only logical explanation I can come up with is that people are too emberassed/afraid to ask their doctors first. They probably want to see if someone out there has gone through the same thing before they go to a professional. I don’t really know?

If it’s a basic medical question it’s okay or if you want to know more about a medical condition. If it is a very serious issue where the person should be at the hospital right then and they are on here instead..that’s retarded.

My doctor won’t answer my questions. She gives very vague answers and tells me to google it. (Even though she now thinks I have pre eclampsia!!).
So I’d rather get a crappy answer from a stranger than no answer at all.

People just want opinions and if you dont want to give your opinion on THE SUBJECT there are asking about then dont answer. They do get medical help also so they are not relying on strangers for medical advice.

Well…Mant of us sometimes aren’t sure if certain things are normal, so we’d like to have experiences from women who have been there. And there are actually a few Nurses that frequent this board and give helpful advice.
Other times, its after hours, and we don’t know whether we need to rush to the hospital, or if we can wait until the doctor is back in their office.

My advice… If you don’t like the questions here… Then don’t come here. Easy =)

some questions are so simple hardly life threatning to give a simle answer, but saves a doctors call or wait in er,some people dont have any common sense or simple general knowledge on the workings of the human body

pregnancy is a scary thing and i guess people just would rather hear from a complete stranger through their own personal experiences. i dont think there is any logical reason. its scary though. some people just want advice whether it be the right advice who knows…but yeah your right the question is baffling.

occasionally you can get better than lay person advice here. but I agree if you care about your health you won’t be waiting 3 days for the "right" answer.

But I think some people don’t want to come off as hypochondriacs. I’m quick to notice something that may be a problem, but I’m not a fan of working with the medical system, so I check web MD and use my own logic to determine the path forward.

most of us are here to get a common opinion. not that we are really trusting what everyone says as opposed to seeing a doctor. And not all responses are from common lay people. I myself am a nurse and wont comment on matters unless I am certain of what i am saying. I think most responders are also basing their answers on experience as well. sometimes we just need a little extra push in the right direction to see the doctor, but sometimes we just need a little reassurance that everythings ok. doctor’s are not the know all for everything, neither are we in here, but it just might make someone feel better knowing that there may be someone out there that may be experiencing or have experienced what we are going through as well.

People are hoping for an easy quick fix and are hoping that their problem isn’t serious so that they won’t have to go to the doctor. Let’s face it…going to the doctor can be a pain in the you know what. If people can avoid it, they will. Also…have you thought that maybe the people asking don’t have health insurance? Its a growing problem in this country that many don’t want to admit (or don’t have to because it doesn’t affect them). A great example of why a universal system is necessary…so people will be more inclined to go to the doctor and not worry about the hassle and fees associated with it.

i think you need to realize that not everyone can get to a a dr right that very second something is wrong, many women have other child, cant get ahold of a dr, although if important enough they should go to the ER but some things are urgent but not urgent enough they cant wait a few hours while the dr calls back.. or wait a day til you get seen.. granted if something is wrong and they feel they they should not do anything but drive to the emergency center closest to them.. but for some of the common questions they can wait for a call back from the dr, or a visit, or to wait it out and see what happens.. so in the meantime while they wait for medical advice from a professional.. i see NOTHING wrong with people asking other people questions, it give them things to look up, ask their dr about and some insight from people who may have been though the same thing, someone who may be educated on a certain matter.. and a current piece of mind..

do you really know they have not called the dr? or that they are not waiting for a car ride? to go to an appointment? or for a baysitter to care for their other child? for the father to get home? do you know their current situtation.. no so why pass judgment?

Doctor’s practice medicine, which means with experience comes their understanding. Taking a poll on Y! Answers where you can access millions of people in one place that have experienced the same condition is actually like getting experience for your understanding. Every time I have looked up an answer about my newborn I got the information that I needed to help him without having to pay a doctor to tell me about his experience. Also, usually you will see questions in the evenings when we can’t get to the doctor but need peace of mind. Get over yourself.

there is one amazing thing I have learned over the years about doctors. they are human beings and despite their many expensive degrees THEY DON"T KNOW EVERYTHING!!!

but then again it might make too much sense to ask people who have possibly actually experienced what you are going through first hand

I think I can answer this. It is my experience that many
doctors are just too busy or hurried to take the time and
actually sit down with their patients and explain things.
It is also my experience that when I do attempt to ask alot
of questions, some doctors seem to get irritated like you’re
wasting their time. Their attitude seems to be "just do what
I say." I had one doctor years ago actually berate me for
questioning his "authority." This kind of attitude is very
demeaning to a patient and rather than "impose" upon their
doctors they just become compliant, "good" patients. I’ve
had better luck getting my questions answered by nurse
practioners rather than the doctor. I think people become
anxious and sort of desparate, so they reach out to others who may have had similiar problems….someone who has
the patience and may actually have some answers.

I think a lot of times they are asking their docs. I dont know one doc at 11 pm at night that picks his own phone up when you call. So… these woman are probably calling, getting a phone service and are waiting for response. Yet they are eager for some kind of answer so they are prob on the internet searching for one and hop on here and ask.
Asking about mucus plugs and such are not death defying questions. But like it or not… if you are one of those people who call your doc every time you fart wondering if you are going to accidentally give birth… your doc is going to have the ‘boy is crying wolf’ idea every time he sees an incoming message from you and may be inclined not to answer as quickly.
I have to say the questions that I don’t get are the ones that ask if they are preg!!! We dont’ know… go get a test.
Anyway.. that is my two cents. I personally dont mind people asking some of these questions… because of people who call the docs for every tiny thing… insurance and medical costs go up and now you dont even get a doc any more… geesh… you get a nurse that is on call and if they determine you need more attention THEN THEY call the doc.
      Nice racket huh?

Some people don’t trust medical professionals to give them a straight answer without first making them go through a number of tests, thereby racking up their medical bill. I’m not saying that not asking the doctor is a sensible answer, but I’d say a number of people get on here because they’re worried about financing another trip to the hospital.

Me, I’d bite the bullet if I were worried about my baby. But I also try to give as honest and clear answers as I can to those who ask questions.

Some people, also, start profiles just to stir the waters. Usually, they’re easy to tell by their careless tone of voice and/or the fact that they have 4 questions that all contradict each other (ie I’m 16/18/13 and 6/15/32 weeks pregnant …).

But for those who genuinely ask online, I’d say generally it’s with the hope that they will get the answer they need without facing higher healthcare costs. Or out of a desire to keep from looking stupid (after all, internet it anonymous). Or possibly to get a second opinion after already getting a response from their doc….?

this site was made for questions and answers. it’s normal for people to ask a question, and get other opinions before asking a doctor and feeling stupid.
      ADDITION
for "Penny" you must be an idiot too. you’ve been asking questions too. i saw one about a cat. why didn’t you ask a vet, huh?

people are seeking opinions basically from other pregnant peoples experiences, and dont want to exaggerate the situation…because the experience is new to them they want to ask some people if they have experienced the same thing, and lets be true, not all doc were available 24/7 for all the questions, and you are super lucky if you find someone who can do that…
so if you dont like these things, just dont come in this section…!
