Learn about BREASTFEEDING VS BOTTLE FEEDING

April 16, 2011 By Pilar Estefana

Choosing between breastfeeding and bottle feeding/formula feeding is a

personal choice for a mother. It is a choice that is respected by your physician and
pediatrician, and they will give you some guidance on how to do so. However,
pediatricians do encourage that you breastfeed for the first 6 months because it has
a lot of benefits for your growing infant.

BREASTFEEDING

Breastfeeding has a lot of benefits for both you and your growing infant,
making it the first choice that pediatricians advocate for infant feeding.

ADVANTAGES

  • Free: produced by your own body, you do not need to worry about your
budget in order to give your baby the nutrients that he needs.
  • Gets you back in shape: breast feeding causes you to consume a
certain amount of calories for production and secretion. Think of
breastfeeding like you’re jogging in the morning, only you’re sitting or
lying down and bonding with your infant. Aside from that, it helps your
uterus go back to its pre-pregnancy state faster.
  • Promotes resistance to common disease and infections: colostrum,
the initial breast milk produced by a mother is rich in Immunoglobulin
IgA. This form of passive-natural immunization helps is important for the
infant for his immune system is still immature. Breastfed infants have
lesser incidence of getting sick compared to formula-fed babies.
  • Aids in better digestion: the protein of breast milk is easier to digest
and absorb compared to those found in infant formula. Because of this,
there is lesser incidence of constipation and diarrhea.
  • Promotes mother-infant bonding: While you’re breastfeeding, you
always hold your infant close. Skin-to-skin contact makes your baby
more attuned to your body temperature, heartbeat, and scent.

    DISADVANTAGES

  • Discomfort: some mothers report slight pain whenever the infant suck,
especially during the first time. The problem primarily lies on the
improper latching of the infant. You and your infant needs to be
comfortable with each other, and it takes the both of you to teach each
other how to feed your infant.
  • Only you can feed your baby: if your baby has gotten so used to your
scent, it may be difficult for your partner or other caregiver to feed your
    baby.

Lear about When Real Life Happens

April 15, 2011 By Pilar Estefana

After you give birth, you are given some time off from work to care for your baby and to also give your body a chance to heal. But life has to go on, and while you feel the need to stay home for a bit more, you need to go back to work and fulfill your other responsibility. It takes a while to readjust to your old life. After all, you’ve spent weeks just taking care of your newborn that you’ve become accustomed to your life at home. It’s hard to kick start the more active lifestyle. But you sometimes are left with no choice but to face the cold and harsh reality of it all. You baby has needs, and if you look at your expenses, you’ll notice that being a parent requires you to shell out your cash every so often.

Expect a big change when you go back to work. You have to worry about more people, and sometimes, they will also feel the impact of your lack of presence. Do you want to quit? Do you want to become a full-time mommy? Before you make that crucial decision, you need to talk to your partner about it. Make plans and set a schedule. That way, you will somehow find the time to bond with your infant when you get home. You may need to spread yourself thin, but this is a part of the lifestyle you’ve chosen. If you have the budget, hire a caregiver and make sure you check what’s happening in your home all through the day. Knowing helps you concentrate on your work more.

There is a need for you to promote work-life balance. If you feel as if your schedule takes too much time away from your little one, it’s time to think of a new path. Remember, your new baby goes through these wonderful moments once and you wouldn’t want to miss out on anything. When it comes to big decisions, getting cold feet is very understandable. You now have bigger shoes to fill and the last thing you want to do is ignore the family you’ve created. You have to make your child feel that with every decision you make, he is still on your priority and that work is just a distant second.

If you’ve been gone from the action too long, your job is now to know what is exactly required of you. You can do this by talking to career moms who have been through the whole game of home-life juggling. Welcome their advice but always take into consideration the needs of your infant. This way, when you leave your baby home, you have a strong and dependable support system. If you have a caregiver, that person needs to be competent and dependable. They will be taking on the responsibility of looking after your child while you are away. Have people to turn to for support, and they should be those that you trust wholeheartedly. Nonetheless, your end goal would be to make your baby feel that you are still the primary person in his life.
