What age does a baby start using a sippy cup?

February 28, 2011 By Pilar Estefana

My son is 5 and a half months old. He currently takes 3 (5 oz) breast milk bottles daily as well as nursing 2-3 times per day. He eats 1/4 cup of cereal twice a day and is starting on vegetables.

When will he start using a sippy cup in addition to the bottle and what does a baby drink in the sippy cup? I’m not a big fan of sugary juices and I’ve heard a baby can get too much water.

Would Bernat Bamboo yarn be good for a baby blanket?

February 27, 2011 By Pilar Estefana

I would love to crochet a couple of baby blankets for friends but I want the MOST soft yarn money can buy! I made a blanket out of Bernat LuLu yarn and love love loved it, but now that I have found it they discontinued this type of yarn :( So if you have worked with the Bernat LuLu and know the kind of soft I’m talking about, please let me know if you know of something similar. When I went to the Bernat website they directed me to the Bernat Bamboo…I would love to get people’s feed back on this yarn also. Thank you so much for your help!

How Often Should You Breastfeed you baby.

February 25, 2011 By Pilar Estefana

One major concern for mothers when they go home from the hospital with their baby is how often and how much they should feed the little infant.  One common mistake of hospitals after discharge is not teaching first-time mothers how much the baby would demand breastfeeding and why.

Breastfed babies need more feedings compared to formula fed babies because breastmilk is digested faster than formula milk.  This is because the protein molecules in breastmilk are made by nature to be smaller in structure to help your baby’s tiny and underdeveloped digestive system to break down and absorb.  You will notice the difference when you see compare the poop of a breastfed baby to that of a baby who is formula fed.  The poop of a breastfed baby is loose compared to the poop of a formula fed baby.

Breast-fed babies usually feed every 1 ½ hours to 2 hours.  Unless your baby has a medical condition, your pediatrician will tell you to breastfeed your baby on demand.  At night time, you must make sure that your baby does not go beyond 4 hours without feeding.  You must also need to consider the stomach capacity of your baby.  At the first day of life, your baby can take only about 1 teaspoon per feeding, and by day 5, your baby will be able to take in about an ounce of breastmilk.  Every two to three months, the capacity will increase by an ounce or 2.  However, your baby will be the one to determine if she’s full or not.  Don’t force her to feed more than she would need for she may vomit the excess milk.  If you change wet diapers 6-8 times, with stool of 2-3 times a day.  Your baby should be steadily gaining weight, and will look content after each feeding.  If you wish to help your baby gradually increase her stomach capacity, feed your baby in a quiet environment free of distractions.  Research has it that babies consume an extra 25% of normal stomach capacity when her concentration is centered in feeding.

Premature babies are to be fed in a different manner.  You need to stick to your pediatrician’s advice on when to feed your premature baby.  Premature babies are as they are: premature so the reflexes and cues normally seen in hungry and full-term babies are not observed.  They need to be stimulated and even awaken at night in order to feed. You can stimulate them by coaxing them with a finger or a nipple rubbed at their cheek.

It is important to take into consideration how to properly feed your baby.  This would ensure that your baby is well fed and will develop properly.  This would also ensure that any possible eating problems in the future will be avoided.

Walkers review: Are They Really Safe for Babies?

February 25, 2011 By Pilar Estefana

Experts say that walkers hinder the natural developmental progression of your baby to walk.  They give the baby a sense of movement without aiding in strengthening major muscles for walking.  They move while pushing the walker so they can move from place to place without the need to fully plant their feet on the ground.  Walkers are designed to move in all directions, and most walkers move better backwards.  This just develops the muscles at the back of their legs, and not the front muscles which are most needed for walking.  Their sense of balance and coordination when it comes to walking is not encouraged for the walker itself is giving the baby the support and balance to move and prop himself up.  They learn to depend on the walker for support and movement, and not their own strength.

Aside from developmental issues, walkers also pose a threat to your baby’s safety.  Babies do not have a sense of safety and caution.  Their only desire is to move, move, and move so they can explore around them.  The more they move, the more they learn.  However, when babies are in walkers, they also gain access to several places in the house that should be off-limits to them.  This causes accidents, mainly head injuries and fractures.  The causes of accidents while your baby is in walker are mostly due to the following:

          • Snags in the carpet, objects or toys that obstruct the path of the walker.
          • Not seeing the floor that they are stepping on for the walker obstructs their vision, and this can cause them to fall over stairs or a lowered step that leads to the backyard.
          • Because babies do not know how to stop a walker in time, a running baby may bump into a precariously balanced furniture or gate causing either the furniture or the walker to topple over the baby.

Never rely on walkers to be your baby’s entertainment system or babysitter.  You still have to supervise your baby and ensure that you have installed some safety devices in your home to make sure that accidents will be prevented as much as possible.  Install baby-proof locks in doors, bolt pieces of furniture to the floor or wall, and keep the floor free from objects to maintain safety of your baby.
