When should you start feeding baby solid food?

August 19, 2010 By Pilar Estefana

When should you start feeding baby solid food? Should you start when they are four months old, or wait until they are six months? What happens if you are raising a preemie? Do you go by the real age or the adjusted age? These are just a few of the questions that parents ask themselves and their doctors when they are wondering how to and when to begin feeding solid foods to their babies. Each baby is different, and they all start comfortably at a different time. There are cues you can look for, and you should always listen to your doctor.

Many can start feeding baby solid food as early as four months, but do not do this without the blessing of your doctor. Most start out with rice and then oatmeal cereal made just for baby. There are some that believe that these are not the right choices, even if they are the easiest to digest right away. Some believe that rice cereal can lead to diabetes or weight problems later in life. They skip right to simple vegetables first, like peas, green beans, or carrots. Your doctor can talk to you more about it. They may feel the cereal issue is a myth or they may tell you to do what you think is best.

When you start, you have to watch your baby for signs that everything is okay. Before you even consider feeding baby solid food, there are some things you should see. For one, your baby should be able to sit up with assistance rather well. They should show interest when you are eating, and they should have some hand control. They will have to master keeping the food in the mouth as the tongue pushes outwards when drinking a bottle. They should get the hang of it rather quickly, but if not, don’t push it. Put it away for a later date.

You want to watch for some types of reactions when you start feeding baby solid food. Start with just one food and feed them just a few bites of it a day for four days. See how their body responds. Some babies simple are not ready and they may develop painful gas or diarrhea. This usually means their digestive system is not ready. In some rare cases it may mean an allergy, but don’t assume that without talking to your doctor. Discontinue or try something else if you have these issues.

Allergies can happen more often with babies than in any other age group. An allergy can sometimes be temporary. Their digestive systems can not handle all foods and you have to keep your eyes open. Never introduce more than one food at once so if there is a problem, you know what the problem is. Don’t force too much at once when feeding baby solid food either. Some suggest vegetables should come before fruits or they will never eat the veggies, but others say that is not true. Use your best judgment, and of course, talk to your doctor about your concerns and for their advice when you start and as you go along.

Sensitive Newborn Skin and much more.

August 19, 2010 By Pilar Estefana

All babies have sensitive skin, but some have skin that is more sensitive than others. Your new baby’s skin is going to be a challenge for a little while, but you shouldn’t overdo it in the worry department. If you find that the newborn skin your baby has is extra sensitive, there are some things you can do to help them. Also remember that though you may think you are being too rough, there is not much you can do about some of the things that are going to happen while you care for your baby.

Newborn skin is soft. It is so soft you may spend a lot of time nuzzling them on the cheek or feeling their little feet. Just remember that when they are very young, it is not a good idea to do something that can tickle them. They can not yet laugh to release the ‘energy’ that tickling is going to produce in them. When they can laugh, keep it light so it is not overwhelming to them. You may notice your fingers leave red marks when tickling if they have extremely sensitive skin. This does not mean you hurt them.

In fact, most newborn skin that is especially sensitive is going to turn red wherever you touch them. The lightest of touches may not leave a red mark or spot, but most things like changing a diaper, picking them up, and change clothing is going to mark up the skin. This type of red mark is going to go away very quickly. If not, someone may have been a bit too rough. When they get stronger, we often feel that they can take a little more, but newborn skin is sensitive for quite a while.

Newborn skin can also be prone to rashes that come from drooling or from feedings. Babies are sloppy and any type of liquid that sits on the skin will cause a rash. If you notice red bumps on the chin or around the neck, it could be that is what is going on. If the rash does not go away with care, ask your pediatrician if something else is going on. It can be hard to keep the neck dry on pudgy babies, but do the best that you can. Their newborn skin needs extra care that only you can give. They should grow out of it, but for a while, you will have to use care. Keep diapers changed often and use powder (if approved by your doctor) to keep moisture from the skin.

There are many other things that can irritate newborn skin. Clothing items made for babies are usually okay for them, but some babies may need soft, natural fibers against their skin. Some adornments can irritate sensitive newborn skin, though they do not bother other babies. Keep your eyes open for red marks and find the cause of all of them to eliminate the problem. Don’t forget to get a detergent made to wash baby clothing items that have no dyes, fragrance, or harsh chemicals. This will go a long way towards keeping baby skin healthy and soothed.

      Healthy Babies

August 19, 2010 By Pilar Estefana

As a new parent, you either feel very confident that you know what you are doing, or you may feel as if you are going to do something to mess up your baby forever. You shouldn’t worry too much, as raising healthy babies is not as hard as you may think it is. The trick is knowing when you need help or advice. You have family and friends to help you and you can always talk to a doctor when you need help. The problem can be getting bad advice. If something does not sound right to you, question it and find out more before you make a mistake.

It can be hard to tell your mother in law that something she did with her children is no longer done because it has been proven to be bad for a baby. Some put sugary syrups in bottles, but research has determined that this is not the best thing to do when raising healthy babies. Some of the older generations may have given baby a bottle of water when they were very young to stretch out times between feedings, but that is not a good idea. In fact, with a newborn, that can be downright dangerous. If baby is hungry, they need calories. Water artificially fills them when they need food, and can throw off their system. Ask your doctor before you give water or add anything to a bottle.

Some people say that the best way to get a baby to sleep through the night would be to let them cry it out. Healthy babies need sleep, as this is when they are growing and developing. However, the man who wrote about getting babies to sleep by allowing them to cry did not recommend what most think of as the Ferber method. You do not leave baby crying until they fall asleep. If you want to try this method, make sure you read the literature rather than just doing what you heard it was all about. Babies need to know you will come when they cry. This builds trust and security.

Healthy babies need love and attention from their parents. Some will not hold their baby when he or she cries or they will try to otherwise train them. Someone told them they are going to spoil the baby or that the baby is manipulating them into getting what they want. The truth is that babies can not manipulate you and you can not spoil a baby. They cry when they need food, a fresh diaper, sleep, or comfort and love. Those are the basic necessities of life. The more you respond to them, the better they are going to be in the long run. Love is a huge part of raising healthy babies.

Healthy babies also need good medical attention. Immunizations are a topic of debate, but remember that medical research has concluded that immunizations do not cause autism. If you are concerned about your babies’ shots or what might be in those shots, talk to your doctor about your concerns. The choice is ultimately up to you, of course, but don’t dismiss these just because of something you read on the Internet. Get the facts and then make the choice you feel will lead to healthy babies in your family.
