Baby Developmental Toys

June 20, 2010 By Pilar Estefana

In general, babies don’t really need to get toys, but it is always fun to watch baby explore the world and learn from the right toys. Some toys are just for fun, but these are generally not useful until baby is about a year and a half or two years old. Baby developmental toys, on the other hand, can be played with by babies as young as three to six months old. These toys are designed to help them learn many of the gross and find motor skills that they are going to learn anyway. They are just a more fun way for mom and dad to be involved with it all.

Some of the first things that can be learned from baby developmental toys is how the hands and feet work. These are gross motor skills at first. You may want to get something that baby can kick. This will be one of the first things they will do. Some bouncy or vibrating chairs have hanging toys near the feet that baby will kick. They learn cause and effect as well as that those feet are theirs and that they can do things with them. They may concentrate very hard on kicking once they realize they can do it and it may keep them occupied for a very long time, or at least until they feel hungry.

The next set of gross motor skills baby is going to work on in regards to baby developmental toys would be that they own those hands and that those hands can do the same things the feet can do. They will swing their arms at hanging toys too, though they will overshoot the mark quite a bit at first. They also learn, as they did with their feet, that if they hit something it will move or make a noise. This is a great discovery for baby and one you will cherish. You may soon find them staring at their hands as they learn what they are and that they have control over what they can do.

After this, you should think about play mats as baby developmental toys that can help your baby with gross motor skills. They should spend some time on their tummy each day (but never while sleeping) so that they can learn to lift both head and shoulders off of the floor. They also learn that they can roll over if they use arms and legs in certain way. These floor mats can be multi-functional baby developmental toys as they have hanging toys and even music included. Most babies love these and use them for quite some time at different levels of development.

Baby developmental toys are also useful when baby starts to develop fine motor skills. One of the first of these will be when they learn to use the pincer grasp. This is the index finger and thumb working together to pick up something rather small. Each baby will do this at their own rate, and there are toys that help with this without baby having to pick up something that they could then put into their mouth and choke on. Look for toys that allow baby to grasp and move things and you will provide hours of learning and entertainment for everyone.

The Baby Essentials You Can’t Live Without

June 19, 2010 By Pilar Estefana

Congratulations on your new arrival (or arrival soon to come)! Having a baby is a miraculous, life changing experience. Nothing will ever be the same after you set eyes on your new bundle of joy for the first time. Children are both a blessing and responsibility, and part of that new, shiny responsibility is making sure you have all the baby essentials. While there are dozens of lists out there to help you prepare for bringing your little angel home, here are a couple of baby essentials that are indispensable in the first few days.

The Baby Essentials You Can’t Live Without

1. Formula- While many mothers choose to breastfeed, formula is one of the baby essentials that every mother should keep in the house. The best of intentions can fall to the wayside, whether it’s because of the baby’s tastes or yours. Having formula on hand can help prevent a stressed out mother from losing her mind by giving you the peace of mind in knowing that the baby will get the nutrition you need no matter what happens. Just keep it close by in case things change.

2. Diapers- This is one of those baby essentials that seem intuitive, but stockpiling on diapers can be a real life saver. New parents usually don’t want to move they’re so exhausted. Having to go to the store because you thought your little pee monster would be fine for a few more days is not a fun experience. Make sure you’re stocked to the gills in diapers, just as a precaution.

3. Spit rags- Those angelic looking beings tend to have a nasty habit of pulling an exorcist impression on a regular basis. Not only are these impressions convincing, they’re incredibly messy, have at least twenty spit rags at your disposal for feedings and burpings. It will save you many a cute baby outfit, and at least as many loads of wash in the long run. Spit rags are one of those baby essentials you can’t live without.

4. Blankets- Blankets are easily one of those baby essentials that people overlook. It’s great to have some keepsake blankets put to the side that are pretty to look at but not very functional. However, it is way more important to have large, soft blankets for baby to cuddle with and be swaddled in. Many a tragic infant has been subdued by the loving touch of a fuzzy blanket. However, much like the spit rags, you will go through these at a rapid rate. Make sure you have plenty on hand.

Baby Feeding Schedule and much more.

June 18, 2010 By Pilar Estefana

When you bring your new baby home, you already know you are in for a lot of sleepless nights. Until a baby is twelve or more pounds, they are going to need nighttime feedings to stay healthy and grow. After that weight, some will still need to get up and eat, though it might be more of a self-soothing issue than a hunger issue. You may want to have a baby feeding schedule that works best for your life, but at first, that is not really up to you. For the first six or so months, your baby is totally and fully in charge.

Most doctors will tell you that a baby feeding schedule is up to the baby. While some will recommend that you feed them at certain intervals, most babies will have to eat on demand. They know when they are hungry and when they are not. Baby’s bodies will demand food when needed, and the hunger signals shut off when food is not needed. They will not overeat as an infant. At most, you may be told that if they do not get up after a certain time that you should wake them up and feed them. You can not, however, withhold food or feed water because you want a schedule. It is not good for them.

After a while, you may notice that things work into their own rhythm without any input from you. A baby feeding schedule will emerge that you can sometimes rely on, but not always. They will get use to waking and sleeping at certain times, and you will find those time repeat. You can not count on anything though. If they are going through a growth spurt, they need to eat more often and in higher quantities and sleep more. Once the spurt is over, they will go back to the way things were before the spurt started.

A baby feeding schedule will be up to you somewhat when you start solids. Babies start eating cereal between four and six months. This is when you have some input. You can pick a time of day to start, and then two times a day when they are better at eating. They will later start simple baby foods like peas and bananas, and those can also be fed when you feel best. Most take this chance to set it up so baby is eating solids at the table at meal time with the rest of the family. Finally, you have some control over when baby needs to eat.

If you have a premature baby, things are going to be a bit different in the early days. There will be a baby feeding schedule at the NICU and at home for a short time. Preemies sleep most of the time, and the doctors will recommend they eat so many times a day, and those feedings can be scheduled because the babies usually have to be woken to eat. Once they get home, this may stick for a while, but then you will switch to the on demand feedings as anyone with a newborn would do.

A Car Seat Timeline: Which One When?

June 17, 2010 By Pilar Estefana

One of the major steps in preparing for fatherhood is selecting a car seat for your baby. With so many to choose from, how do you know which carseat is appropriate? In this episode of The Lab, Daddy Clay and Daddy Brad clear up any confusion you may have and educate you on which infant car seat you need during the various stages of child development. Using baby seats from Chicco, Britax, and Graco, they demonstrate when your child will transition from rear-facing or convertible car seats to forward facing carseats and eventually booster seats.
