I heard the receiving/swaddling blanket used in the hospitals when a baby is born is softer than the ones we buy outside since it’s cotton, soft etc. One of my friend said you can actually take back the blankets given in the hospital. Is that true, has anyone done that, can I solely depend on that and not bring my own swaddling blankets? Anyone done this before? By the way are we allowed to take them back? Are they brand new or used ones? Will the hospital charge us?
Thanks!

The hospital told me no, but I took one with me as a keepsake. Turns out this one works the best for my little girl as a swaddling blanket, and yes it is very soft. I would take several if you are able to. Buy stretchable, wide swaddling blankets at least 6 of them. Babies sweat, spit up, and so forth so you need a few. They make great blankets for carseat, out and about, and so forth. Not sure if you can take them back for health reasons even though they clean them sterile wise. I do not think the hospital will charge you as long as you don’t mention it. Congrats!

No, you can’t use the one they were using. At least, my hospital wouldn’t let me. They did let me take her little stocking hat, and they gave me a swaddling blanket that had never been used. But it isn’t any nicer than the ones you can buy at the store. It’s plain white, and I have never used it. Defintely bring your own.

I think that you can take them since my hospital let me take the diapers, alcohol wipes, and nasal aspirator. You can always just ask. We pay so much for our insurance to have a baby there, so why not? I actually preferred the ones I bought because they seemed softer, but I guess it’s because I tumble dried them and the hospital probably didn’t bother with that.

take it all!!!! they will give you TONS of stuff, samples, diapers, wash bins, pacifiers, nose suckers, swaddling blanket, etc.
just load it all up!
take a blanket in case someone stops you, but i never heard of someone stopping them.
i didn’t take my son’s blanket, b/c i didn’t realize you could until after the fact……bummer.
i still have his tiny little newborn hat, though….awwww!
*sniff sniff* he just turned 1 on monday….he’s so big now!!!!

Yes, when your baby is born the hospital will give you a lot of free goodys. My local hospital even gives you a carseat to take the baby home in, I don’t know if all hospitals do that or not but they will at least give you a ton of blankets, and some diapers and formula.
I don’t have any children but I know a few people that have and that is what the hospital gave them, even if they already had a carseat. I guess a spare, and they make sure it is in properly before you leave.

I thought mine were softer!!
I didn’t bring any w/ me to the hospital – just used theirs.
Didn’t want to bring any home w/us because mine were better. when we left, it was a warm day, but we had a pretty pink cotton blanket for the a/c in the car.
the ones in our hospital were used… they had been washed several times for some of them… the stripes on some were more faded than the others… as was the hospital logo

Where my daughter was born they gave us A LOT of stuff but they said we werent to take any linens, (shirt, birp cloths, and blankets). I brought my own blanket for her but I did end up taking their blanket too for her memory box…they never noticed and i wasnt charged, I’m sure in reality they don’t care. They are nice blankets you can get a tight swaddle with them, but you can buy the same type in stores.

The hospital (or linen service) washes those blankets and they are reused. You could take it, but technically it would be stealing. You can use them while you are in the hospital, but should pack 1 or 2 for the trip home.

no they are not for the taking, they will tell you you can take everything on the cart they provided to you( diapers, wipes, alchohol swabs, padding, pads for you, plastic tub etc.) except the clothes they provided your baby and the receiving blankets. HOWEVER, i took the one she came to me in and also a few receiving blankets, they didnt charge me.
HAHAH! I figured I deserved to take home some hospital memories too!

i live in canada, and my with 1st 2 kids i was allowed to take the blanket. that was 12 and 16 years ago. My last 2 children, ages 2 and 6 months…they actually have a stamp on the blankets and clothes that is theft if you take them.
2 years ago, i asked the nurse if my husband could take the first blanket that was wrapped around baby, home, so that our puppy could get used to the new baby smell before we brought her home…they saved it for us and gave it.
6 months ago we asked the same thing and the nurse said yes, but if anyone else asked just to tell them that i will bring it back. she told me that some bring it back and some dont.
they are not brand new, but you cant really tell.
I would suggest you take 1 of your own just in case they absolutely refuse. i dont think they would charge you for it, but you never know. call ahead and ask if you like. it appears alot of hospitals are different, and with the amount of staff , every nurse may have a different view or attitude that day.
