Raising Healthy Children in a Toxic World – Part 1

August 29, 2011 By Pilar Estefana

This is Part 1 of a two part video filmed at the Mount Sinai Childrens Environmental Health Centers 2nd Annual Greening Our Children Benefit. In this video, Mrs. Rhonda Sherwood and Mr. Bobby Kennedy Jr. describe the increased number of chemicals released into our environment. Mrs. Sherwood focuses on the many ways in which we are exposed to environmental toxins in our everyday lives. Mr. Kennedy goes on to discuss the following themes: • The incredible rise in the rate of asthma amongst children born today, especially when considered in light of the fact that in Mr. Kennedys youth it was considered a rare disease; • The rapidly growing rates of autism and other neurological disorders amongst children; • The insufficiency of current laws governing the use and release of chemicals into our environment; • The EPAs inability to conduct research on the toxicity of various drugs and the resulting reliance on industry to conduct research on the safety of their own synthetic chemicals; • The influence of corporations on scientific studies being conducted with regards to the safety of synthetic chemicals. After Mr. Kennedys passionate speech, Dr. Philip J. Landrigan gave his expert opinion on the effects of environmental toxins amongst children today and how we can work together to prevent chronic diseases. To see Dr. Landrigans speech, please view Part 2 of this video. For more information, visit www.greeningourchildren.org.

Raising Healthy Children in a Toxic World – Part 2

June 18, 2011 By Pilar Estefana

This is Part 2 of a two part video filmed at the Mount Sinai Childrens Environmental Health Centers 2nd Annual Greening Our Children Benefit. In this video, Dr. Philip J. Landrigan discusses the current state of pediatric health and its environmental threats. In particular, Dr. Landrigan notes that: • The diseases affecting youth today are not acute illnesses but are instead chronic. Those with the largest incidence include asthma, learning disabilities, cancer, obesity, birth defects, and allergies; • Since the 1970s, the rate of childhood leukemia has increased at a rate of approximately 1% per year; • Increasing incidence of disorders of the male reproductive system have been observed including decreased sperm counts and increasing rates of testicular cancer and hypospadias; • Rates of obesity continue to rise especially among children of poor socioeconomic backgrounds. In Mount Sinais own backyard, East Harlem, 42% of 5 year old children entering kindergarten are obese. Dr. Landrigan states that the combined evidence shows that genetic factors alone cannot account for these rapidly increasing rates of chronic diseases; something else must be to blame. Evidence points towards environmental factors, particularly the large number of synthetic chemicals released into our environment every day. The message to take away is one of hope: these diseases are preventable. With good research, strong political action and the will of the populous we can catalyze change and again …

Dr. Doris Rapp – Children’s Allergies to Food & Environment

May 17, 2011 By Pilar Estefana

Dr. Rapp is dedicated to sharing important information about harmful environmental factors that can affect how children and adults feel, think and act in our high-tech, high-stress, high-profit world. The “progress at any cost” mentality is rapidly overwhelming our bodies as we attempt to cope with our increasingly polluted environment. Dr. Rapp is committed to educate both the public and health professionals about the ominous physical and behavioral changes frequently evident in children and adults. The more we know, the more we can protect ourselves and our loved ones by taking some often easy and inexpensive precautions. We simply have to be more informed so we can make better choices. In her breakthrough book, “Is This Your Child’s World?” – Dr. Rapp identifies the major symptoms of potentially unrecognized allergies in children and adults, suggesting possible sensitivities to dust, mold, pollen, foods or chemicals. Allergies are much more than high fever, asthma and itchy skin. It is possible to identify allergies by simply looking at someone. At times it is surprisingly easy to find and eliminate the cause. The typical clues of allergies and environmental illness can include any combination of the following: Rubbing Nose Upwards, Eye Wrinkles, Dark Eye Circles, Sudden Aggression, Scarlet Earlobes, A Spacey Look, Extreme Activity Changes, Wiggly Legs, Red Cheeks, A Mottled Tongue

More about Physical Movement Can Make Wonders for Asthma Sufferers

January 15, 2011 By Pilar Estefana

Physical activity is one of the main factors which can keep the body in good shape and maintain the organism’s health. There are many benefits associated with physical exercises, yet for asthmatics making exercises on a regular basis has become similar to torture. Many people suffering of asthma are afraid of making any type of movement for fear of not having an asthma attack.

Yet, in spite of their fear, physical exercises are highly recommended in asthma treatment, as it decreases the amount of fat deposits (where it is necessary) and it increases the cardio-respiratory fitness, which contributes to a better breathing. Thus, all asthma sufferers which want to become independent of their inhalers must start making physical movement.

Those people who have not done any type of physical exercise before, should start by making only moderate movement, for a short period of time. They can start by exercising only 20 minutes per day, three days a week and gradually increase the time they dedicate to this activity to 30 or even 50 minutes every day for 3 up to five days per week. Ideally, each asthmatic should do at least half an hour of physical exercise each and every day. This will enable them to breathe better and will significantly lower their asthma attacks.

There are three ways through which an asthmatic can start making physical movement. First alternative is that of hiring a personal trainer who will design a program of exercises especially for you. Also, because on a specified period you will have to meet your trainer, you will be more determined to go on with the program, than if you do it at home by yourself.

Those who are not disturbed by the people around have the alternative of purchasing a monthly membership at one of the many gyms from nearby. This will offer them the possibility of interacting with people, which will boost the asthmatic’s moral and will make them feel more confident.
Lastly, those who do not feel like getting out of the house can buy their own equipment and exercise at home, yet in order to make sure that your asthma is alleviated, the exercises must be done constantly. Also, they can be combined with proper diet for more effective results.
Physical exercise can indeed make wonders for your asthma, but it is not the only one which can alleviate your ailment. Find out who you can free yourself for good of asthma by reading … follow the complete program you will find there and in a couple of months you will forget about inhalers and asthma medicine.
