My Fussy Babies
Some babies are born with a sweet and calm temperament, and some come into the world roaring and spirited. Your baby has his or her personality in place long before he or she comes into the world. Some babies are easy and they only complain when something is wrong. Others have colic that can go on for hours each day with no real reason for the discomfort to be found. Most babies are somewhere in between. Whatever the case with your baby, you should learn a few things that can help fussy babies calm down so you can get some peace and so that they can feel better.
The womb is snug, warm, and secure. They lose that secure and warm feeling when they are born. Fussy babies often miss how they felt in the womb and long for that feeling again. Do all you can to mimic the womb to calm fussy babies? Swaddling is one way to make them feel secure, and gentle rocking can also help them feel right at home. Loud noises and bright lights may make a fussy baby worse, so keep the light and noise down when they seem to startle easy. Often, these things work well when nothing is physically wrong with the baby.
Some fussy babies need more soothing than others. If you have one that responds to swaddling and other small things, but those things do not quite do the trick, you may have to go with something a bit stronger. Some parents have found that putting a baby in a car and driving around when nothing else seems to work will do the trick. Try to drive where you will not hit a lot of stop signs or red lights. The motion and the drone of the engine can be enough to soothe a crying and colicky baby when nothing else seems to work.
You don’t have to leave the house to find ways to soothe fussy babies. You can try to run a vacuum cleaner near the baby. Don’t get too close, as you don’t want the noise to scare them or hurt their ears. You can also try a dryer as well. These have constant but soothing tones that may keep you awake, but they have the opposite effect on a baby. White noise machines and fans can also do the trick. Whatever you do, do not set the baby on the top of a dryer without a hand on them. Many babies have been hurt from falls from moments like those.
If you can not think of or try anything that soothes fussy babies for you, you may have to talk to your doctor. They could be in pain or have a gas of which they can not expel. Some like to use drops or other natural remedies like gripe water to soothe a baby that seems to have gas issues. There could be something else wrong as well. When your baby refuses to settle no matter what you do or try, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Your doctor may suggest something you missed, to find another problem that can be addressed.
When should you start feeding baby solid food?
When should you start feeding baby solid food? Should you start when they are four months old, or wait until they are six months? What happens if you are raising a preemie? Do you go by the real age or the adjusted age? These are just a few of the questions that parents ask themselves and their doctors when they are wondering how to and when to begin feeding solid foods to their babies. Each baby is different, and they all start comfortably at a different time. There are cues you can look for, and you should always listen to your doctor.
Many can start feeding baby solid food as early as four months, but do not do this without the blessing of your doctor. Most start out with rice and then oatmeal cereal made just for baby. There are some that believe that these are not the right choices, even if they are the easiest to digest right away. Some believe that rice cereal can lead to diabetes or weight problems later in life. They skip right to simple vegetables first, like peas, green beans, or carrots. Your doctor can talk to you more about it. They may feel the cereal issue is a myth or they may tell you to do what you think is best.
When you start, you have to watch your baby for signs that everything is okay. Before you even consider feeding baby solid food, there are some things you should see. For one, your baby should be able to sit up with assistance rather well. They should show interest when you are eating, and they should have some hand control. They will have to master keeping the food in the mouth as the tongue pushes outwards when drinking a bottle. They should get the hang of it rather quickly, but if not, don’t push it. Put it away for a later date.
You want to watch for some types of reactions when you start feeding baby solid food. Start with just one food and feed them just a few bites of it a day for four days. See how their body responds. Some babies simple are not ready and they may develop painful gas or diarrhea. This usually means their digestive system is not ready. In some rare cases it may mean an allergy, but don’t assume that without talking to your doctor. Discontinue or try something else if you have these issues.
Allergies can happen more often with babies than in any other age group. An allergy can sometimes be temporary. Their digestive systems can not handle all foods and you have to keep your eyes open. Never introduce more than one food at once so if there is a problem, you know what the problem is. Don’t force too much at once when feeding baby solid food either. Some suggest vegetables should come before fruits or they will never eat the veggies, but others say that is not true. Use your best judgment, and of course, talk to your doctor about your concerns and for their advice when you start and as you go along.
More about Stroll in Style with the Right Kind of Baby Strollers
From the time we are young, we are inundated with idyllic images of young couples on Sunday strolls in the park with their perfect bundle of joy in their charming little buggy. In reality, that’s rarely the way things go. Most of us don’t have time for a Sunday stroll, let alone getting baby all gussied up for the outing. That doesn’t mean we don’t like to take the little one out for walks. It’s healthy, for both you and baby. Still, maybe the buggy is not your style. Thankfully, there a wide variety of baby strollers to choose from.
Umbrella stroller- Here is one of the more traditional types of baby strollers. We’ve all seen them. These basic fold up strollers have no extra storage space, are super light weight and portable, and keep baby snug with a small clothe pouch that they sit in. Though not ideal for children who cannot hold their head up, this is a great little baby stroller.
Lightweight stroller- These are baby strollers that are very practical. At less than 20 lbs., they are easy to fold up and maneuver. Many come with reclining seats and sun shades, as well as some form of storage underneath. The only complaint about these is that they are not traditionally very sturdy, so they may not last longer than one child.
Standard stroller- A bit larger and bulkier than their lightweight counterparts, these baby strollers tend to come with a few more bells and whistles. With wider seats, larger wheels and more varied storage areas (ex. coffee or cell phone holders), these can be great for long day trips. The draw back for this particular kind of baby stroller is that it is much more difficult to lug about. Many are sold as travel systems, as well. This means they will be sold with an infant carrier and car seat, which does make life a little bit easier, and allows you to use the same car seat for longer.
Running stroller- This baby stroller is meant for those on the go! Did you worry that, post-baby; you would never be able to go for your beloved morning runs again? Think twice! Running and jogging strollers today are lightweight, easy to maneuver, and perfect for taking your little one for a run. The large wheels make them much easier to push, and the three wheel design make them the perfect baby stroller for fast, tight turns.
Buggy- This may seem like an old fashioned baby stroller, but it’s cute that way. These elevated, lay flat baby strollers can be wonderful for taking infants out, as it allows them to lay flat, as though in their own bed, while you get some fresh air. It also has them at a higher elevation than most traditional baby strollers, so it is easier for you to put them and take them out. They do have two downsides though. For one, they are usually tremendously expensive. We’re talking about $600 for a baby stroller. Making things worse, they are also very limited in use. Once your child can roll, a buggy is more dangerous than anything.
