What kind of clothes do you buy for a baby born in March?

August 7, 2010 By Pilar Estefana

Hi! I am due March 15th, (the Ides of March!) and I’m wondering what do I buy? I live in Chicago, so sometimes it is tricky weather, so do I invest in one of those sleeping bag things? Should I get a snowsuit jacket? How many bodies should I buy? Should the be long or short sleeved? How many blankets, what kind? Should I always dress him in pj’s? I am kinda lost on what the essentials are, being that this is my first so any advice would be great!

      10 onsies.
      2 pairs of pj’s

Buy layers. You can’t have too many onesies. Blankets and wraps will be enough for the cold. By the time she is crawling around, it will be hot out.

Hi, I’m due in April and I’m kinda in the same boat as you, but my boyfriends sister gave me some advice. She said it was really good just to buy a little of everything, at some point everything is going to come in handy, but I would also suggest just to buy a few long sleeves and maybe a couple of little light coats since he or she will be growing out of it more than likely before it becomes really cold again.

      Congratulations!!
I’m a March baby myself, and I have a baby that was born in April this year.
Buy as many onesies as you can get your hands on! Those things are a godsend. They go under or with everything. If you don’t know what sex you’re having, buy greens, yellows, whites, and even reds.
Buy at least 5 of the long sleepers. Especially in the Midwest, it will get chilly and babies have to stay very warm!
I wouldn’t invest in a snow suit. By the time snow comes around again, it will have outgrown it. Instead, buy heavy sweaters, jackets, and maybe one heavier coat, but don’t break the bank on it, just buy one if you find an inexpensive one.
Buy long pants, some outfits like overalls, sweatpant and tee sets, some baby jeans, etc. Always have 2 nicer outfits on hand.

Layers is good … there are so many cute outfits for spring … dresses and suits oh so much fun shopping for baby!

      But the essentials are
onsies …. short sleeve are good because you can just put on a layer over top
sleepers … long sleeves are a give in, but stick with the lighter materials blankets are good for when they’re cold
sleeping bag things? … like the bag that baby sleeps in the crib … they won’t need that until they are able to kick off the covers … if you mean a thing that goes over the car seat, YES get one, because you won’t have to worry about a bunting bag or snow suit. You just put him in and zip it up and go.
Get a couple of hats, mittens so they don’t scratch themselves with their razor blade nails and a one or two booties, the number of booties depends on the sleepers you buy, if the sleeper have feet you don’t put booties on.
Blankets, receiving blankets you cna never have too many, knitted blankets will probably be given as well as quilts baby showers are great. You can just get a nice flannel one and if you are buying a crib set then the comforter will be included in that.
Pj’s don’t need to be worn all the time, they are just so comfortable and they really do sleep the majority of the time.
      Good luck!

I’m from the Chicago area too, so I know what you mean. I don’t think I would invest in one of those sleeping bags. All you need is one of those little fleece jackets and a nice soft (microfiber) type of blanket. I probably would have a few blankets on hand just in case he’s a pucker and you need to change them often. Just remember, dress your baby the way you dress. By that I mean if you are comfortable wearing just a light jacket, then dress him the same way.

      Mom of 7!!!!
P.S. Good luck with that new baby. Love him with all your heart!

i had my baby march 20th. and i found that buying things that could be layered worked best. buy lots of short sleeve onsies and a couple of long sleeve ones to go under pajamas. soft pajamas or gowns are really all you need and use blankets on cold days. remember the baby will not be going out much and will mostly be sleeping and being held in your nice warm house for the first month or so and then it will most likely be warm out. then you can have cute summer outfits for the summer in 3 month size You wont need a snowsuit. Lots of recieving blankets and some fleecy thicker ones will do the trick.
