My friend of many years is having a baby girl here in about 2-3 weeks. They are having a shower tomorrow and I still need a gift for them. I know everyone will be getting them bottle warmers and blankets, etc. I have always heard the the most expensive items have always been diapers because of how often you have to buy them, so I wanted to get them a couple cases of diapers. However, i don’t know what size to buy them because I’ve never had a kid and its been a while since anyone I know did either. The baby would be born in about 2-3 weeks and there are so many sizes of diapers. Do I get them small sizes or average ones? Does the weight on the front of boxes really matter? How long does it take before a baby is 15lbs or more? Any advice is much appreciated.

Great idea. They’re never going to forget you. You should buy a small pack of newborn diapers and a larger pack of size ones. Size ones go from about 12 lbs. to 16 lbs. Huggies are the best…no leaks. For your money if you have a Costco membership, they sell 192 diapers for about $27 bucks. THAT’S a good deal! A baby born under 7 lbs will take about 6 weeks to get to 15 lbs. A baby born 8-10 lbs will get to 15 lbs in 4-8 weeks. That time flies by!!

Get ’em a gift card so they can get what they need……

Buy the newborn size. If you buy a size too big, it’s no big deal, eventually the child will use them.
What??!! says
Usually Pampers, Newborns are good….

If you have a membership to Sam’s Club or Costco, go there. Buy the Huggies size 1-2 (It’s all in the same box) and just give that. The newborn diapers are for really tiny babies (preemies) and aren’t worth the money. Get a couple boxes of those, they only cost like $16 a box and you get a lot. Also, you can get the wipes there too. That will last a long time.

here ya go ,,get 2 boxes of new born diapers and 2 boxes of the next size up they are all marked in weight too and it is a thoughtful gift

Buy then 1 or 2 of several sizes. Babies grow pretty quickly. One day one size will fit and the next it won’t lol Having several sizes handy makes the run out to the market at 3am to get new diapers something they won’t have to do hopefully!
It’s a great idea. Diapers are sooooo expensive when you’re buying the stinkers all the time.
cherry_girlie_rockin says
newborn, maybe 1 or 2. not any larger though, because they’ll have to store them forever.
Depends on how much the babe weighs at birth. Some are 5 pounders, others 12.

Dude, I think there’s a newborn size. And the size matters because of the baby’s waist size and the leakage involved when you get diapers that are too big, not pretty at all! I speak from experience, my friend! Believe me, you are doing a service to your friend, and if possible for you, get them a ‘Diaper Genie’, if they don’t have one.
It’s a special trash can for diapers, so that you don’t have to smell them after you change them, they sell them at like Toys R Us and other baby stores, they’ll love you for it!
mslorikoch says
Parents are picky about diapers. Your best bet is to get them a Wal-mart, or Target gift card (Or their favorite store). Then they can get the brand, and sizes they need. You could write a little note in your card telling them the gift card is for diaper duty….

if the baby is not born yet buy newborns or if the baby is going to be BIG then get size 1 but my daughter was 6lbs 9oz when born and she hardly fit into the newborns …also if you get like pampers or huggies she can take them anywhere they sell them and exchange them for a smaller or bigger size! Everyone got me 1’s and 2’s because she was said to be about 9 lbs but she was 5 weeks early!
jake S says
dude this is easy (dad of 2) Just get him the size that says newborn. He will go through a ton of those. Also look at getting them a Diaper Genie for disposal.
momof3 says
Get size 1. Newborn diapers only fit babies up to 10 pounds and they become a tight fit after about 8 pounds. A lot of people buy newborn and then the baby outgrows them before you get through them. Size 1 is a size the baby will be in for a while. You may also consider things like wipes , A&D ointment , electrical plug covers (cheap but very much needed), You can also never have enough onesies (in 3-6 months size not newborn)…..EVERYONE buys newborn everything because it is so cute and little but they outgrow newborn in no time esp. if the baby weighs close to 8 pounds at birth. By 4 months many babies are already 16 pounds.
triniwarrior24 says
you can buy the new born and the size right after that( in huggies its stage one) because it makes no sense buying to much newborn diapers because babies tend to outgrow these diapers in about 2 – 4 wks sometimes less when my son was 2weeks i could not use newborn diapers again he had to use stage one
curstadevon says
Get 1 or 2 packages of Newborn and 1 package of size 1. A baby stays in the newborn diapers for about 1-4 months. But that depend on how fast they grow. I have a 2 1/2 year old who is in Size 5 diapers. He has been in those now for about a year. So it just depends on how fast the baby grows.

This will be a nice gift for your friend.
Newborns go through a lot of diapers. Get the newborn size. There are some that have a cut-away section to accomodate the umbilicus until it falls off. This is a nice feature, but the umbilicus doesn’t stay on that long, so don’t invest in a lot of this style.
I find that the weight measurements and the fit of the diapers correspond pretty well.
If you don’t want to get just one size, you might consider getting one case of newborn size (usually N) and then one case of the next size up. But don’t get too many. It’s kind of a pain to store them if there are a lot. For sure do not get size 3,4, or 5. This is usually for babies that are 1 year and older.

Diapers are the best gift to get. I think you should get size one. From my own experience: I had 8 packs of new born diapers, my baby weighed 8lbs 11oz, she wore newborns for a week. I had to take the newborns that I hadn’t used back to the store to get the next size. All babies will wear size one, and if parents have them on hand, they won’t have to run to the store to get them.
milwifenmom says
Just get them a gift card because it sounds like you have the slightest clue on diaper sizes. Get them a gift card to one of the stores like Walmart, Toys R Us, Target or Kmart.

You mentioned that you want to get them a couple of cases. I would get a case of size 2 and a case of size 3. Most babies aren’t in newborn and size 1 for very long. The brand of diaper is another factor to consider. I usually use cloth but when I do use a disposable I prefer Pampers Swaddlers, they are so soft and very absorbent. I also use LUVS but I’ve heard that they are not that great for boy babies because they do gap in the front.
And if you are feeling very generous a case of wipes would be a plus. Get Huggies with no dyes, no scent.
camoprincess32 says
The amount of smaller sized diapers that your friend will need will vary, depending on the size of her baby at birth. I found that the size i used for the longest period of time is size 3. My daughter is 19 months and can still comfortably wear a size 3 diaper. But if your friend does not have a place to store the diapers you can get a few cases of size 1/2 diapers. But my suggestion would be to buy size 3. And wipes too. Buy sensitive skin wipes.

Babies grow fast so too big is ok they will soon ues them.

Get them a big pack of Huggies diapers in newborn.I prefer them from Pampers

Newborn sizes are needed for the first several weeks then the baby will quickly move into size 1. By about 4 months they should be ready for size 2. Personally, I would get them size 1. Someone will get them newborn sizes and they really can use size 1 right after birth (most hospitals use size 1), unless it is a very tiny baby. My 10 month old is getting ready to move out of size 3 and she is 23 lbs.

How about a gift basket (a small, toddler size, wicker one) full of things that they will use daily. I received this and it saved me MANY trips to the store when I was sleep deprived from all of the midnight feedings and other to do’s.
As for diapers, I would get newborn size to ten pounds or size 1; however, size one starts at eight pounds. If they have a baby that is under eight pounds, they may leak; however, that child will grow super fast, so they will use them in a month or two if you choose to buy size 1 diapers.
Some other things that you could include are:
Newborn or sensitive skin baby wipes
Mylecon (infant gas drops)
Infant Tylenol
Baby shampoo
Baby wash
disposable washcloths
nail clippers
comb and brush set
lap pads (these REALLY come in handy)
a teething ring
I received all of these for my shower and it helped out A LOT. Good Luck and have fun at the shower!

I wouldn’t buy a case of newborn diapers. Sometimes babies are born too big for newborn sizes. I would suggest either size 1 or 2. Your friend can always stash them away and use them when their child gets bigger. I always find it nice to have a size larger than my baby is wearing. My babies are usually smaller than most, but my 4 month old is barely 12 pounds. Some babies are born at 10 pounds and move into size 1 or 2s within a month. Good luck!
Heather H says
there are boxes of pampers swaddlers that are size 1-2 that are good for babies up to 15 lbs but look at it this way no matter what size you buy them they are eventually going to use them
mlaurie406 says
I would honestly get size 2 or 3. Many people will get the newborn and 1’s, then nada. We had a "diaper" party for my husband and his friends, and it was awesome how many diapers we got! i don’t really think the guys knew what they we doing buying diapers, but we got a lot of 2’s and 3’s and it really helped down the road!
