Your Questions About Baby Swaddle

Michael asks…

When should I wean my baby from swaddling?

I have a 13 week old who will not sleep unless she is swaddled. It’s comforting to her and it definitely allows for a more restful sleep for her. When/if should I think about weaning her from swaddling? Is it safe to continue for a while yet? If I should wean, what’s the best way to break her of it.

Pilar Estefana answers:

As your baby gets older, she will stop wanting to be swaddled, and will definitely let you know. You don’t have to do anything to speed up that process at all. She will just not like it anymore. It’s a developmental thing. As she starts moving around more, she won’t want to feel confined.
Let her guide you on this one.

Ruth asks…

What is swaddlers diapers and how do you swaddle a baby?

I don’t get what swaddlers diapers like made from pampers or how they differ from just regular diapers and how do you swaddle a baby? I no what swaddling a baby is but I don’t no how to do it. Thanks.
No, this baby is my first and he isnt here yet.

Pilar Estefana answers:

I am using swaddler diapers on my son and the only difference that I see is that they fit around his legs better and they do have the notch in them for the umbilical cord. This is my first to and I didnt know what kind of diapers to use and was given these as a gift and I love the way they fit him. My god daughter was in the regular ones when she was a baby and the only difference I really can see is how they fit.

Donald asks…

How long did you swaddle your baby?

How old was your baby when you stopped swaddling them ?Young babies seem to like it but it seems in todays world people dont do it much. What do you think?

Pilar Estefana answers:

With my son it was between 4 and 5 months. We traveled that summer to the Carolinas and brought a big piece of cotton gauze fabric because he was not good at sleeping unswaddled.

“The Happiest Baby on the Block” was a lifesaver of a book and it is a great guide to swaddling and other calming techniques.

Mandy asks…

What is the best way to wean a baby off swaddling?

Our 7 month old baby cannot fall asleep unless she is wrapped, burrito-style, and swaddled tight. The problems are that she is waking about 5,6 times a night from breaking out of the swaddle. So we get up, re-wrap her, only for the cycle to continue. She is a very demanding child, always wants to be held, or rest in her cradle-rocker where she is also held “close”. Help!

Pilar Estefana answers:

Can you keep her swaddled and place her in one of those “guard” things that are designed to keep baby in place? Or just place a blanket rolled up behind her back and place her on her side?

Susan asks…

Why my baby struggle so much when I start to breastfeed him?

I have a 4 weeks old baby. I am wondering why he will struggle so much, with his arms swinging in front of his face and legs kicking, when beginning to get him to latch on. He will only be settling when I have to force him to focus on the latch on and feeding. Anyone experience the same?

Pilar Estefana answers:

Babies are used to being held tight consider being in the womb. Babies need to be swaddled firmly, they feel safe then. So why not wrap baby in a rug, depending on weather, a light cotton for summer and warm for winter, before feeding. He will feel safe and contented when put on the breast.
